What is IVF?

In IVF, this process of fertilization happens outside the woman’s body. A woman’s eggs are removed under ultrasound guidance  and fertilized in a laboratory using sperm that has been given as a sperm sample from the partner. Next, the fertilized egg, called an embryo, implanted into the woman’s womb/uterus.

When is IVF required ?

IVF may be used to overcome female infertility where it is due to problems with the fallopian tubes , low sperm count or endometriosis making fertilization in vivo difficult. It can also assist in male infertility, in those cases where there is a defect in sperm quality; in such situations Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) may be used, where a sperm cell is injected directly into the egg cell. ICSI is also used when sperm numbers are very low. When indicated, the use of ICSI has been found to increase the success rates of IVF.

What to expect of IVF treatment

IVF does not always result in pregnancy. In general, younger women have a higher chance of success. Success rates decrease dramatically in women over 35-36 years .Our embryology lab is equipped with the latest technology and our doctors are trained and experienced in the most effective micro-manipulation techniques designed to assist in oocyte (egg) fertilization.
